Here’s the deal

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 4, 2009, 1:15 PM
For almost all of the time that Groups have been in the alpha testing period, a couple of other persons and myself have been thinking seriously about making a group for all the different kinds of programmers/scripters/coders on dA: userscripters, journal CSS’ers, dA skinners, dAmn bot programmers and so on. People who are focused on making their own improvements to dA, regardless of whether they're official or not. People who care about making dA better, and have the ideas and the skill to turn it into something users can download or install.

The only problem is — at least for me — that while I’d love to work on creating such a group, I know I won’t have much time to participate in the day-to-day moderation, operation, conceptualization and general managing of the group.

Another thing is that I’m not quite sure what exactly all of us would do in such a group — what justifies its existance other than a list of people who do these kinds of things? What should we do? Galleries? Knowledge bases or tutorials? Wikis? Forums? Whah?

This is why I’m asking you guys. I know I’m not the only one who has thought of such a group. And I know a lot of my watchers could easily be a part of this group, and I’d love to hear your ideas. If we end up making it, what do you think we should be doing? Additionally, could you join the management of such a group and spend time making it awesome once it’s launched?

If you can answer any of these questions, feel free to do it in a comment (here) or a note to me. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for all of your feedback so far. I'm happy to say that a group will be out in a couple of days, and I'm going to need all of your help to make it awesome and keep it that way. Keep your eyes peeled!

Edit 2: If you're interested in joining, note me your Skype username and I will add you to the group convo! Go go! :eager:

i don't have skype. but it sounds like an awesome idea. It seems like it would end up as a group of idea people that would help to get attention to certian issues with the site.

Oh and of course a an exhaustive / up-to-date wiki / knowledgebase on DiFi would be useful

I was thinking of doing the same, but previously the complete lack of group functionality stopped me. Happy to lend a hand with this if you need any help in any way - I'll note you my skype username in a sec (although I only really use skype to talk to my clients when they're trackside somewhere with poor mobile provision, otherwise it's usually switched off as I'm not a massive fan of it). I'm too busy to get into much development in my spare time at the moment that isn't internal business or client-related, but have plenty of time to help manage a group.

One thing I was thinking of as a potential function for the group I was thinking of setting up was collaborative projects hosted in sourceforge (or any other common online version control system) - lots of technical expertise + lots of great ideas could lead to some awesome projects.

I think that its a great idea! I can't be of much help though as I do not have much time and I do not know very much about computers, wish it were otherwise. Good luck

Sounds awesome! I'd love to join but my scripting skillz -hah- mainly consist on tinkering and explaining what's been done in CSS. xD
